Using Krotos Studio in DaVinci Resolve
Krotos Studio DaVinci Resolve Instrument Plugin
As of Krotos Studio 1.8, the platform is now fully supported in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 onwards as an instrument plugin. This makes your sound effects workflow faster than ever before.
Below we show you how to use Krotos Studio directly within DaVinci Resolve.
Step 1. Click the Fairlight Tab
You may be more used to the cut, edit, fusion and render windows for your Resolve workflow, but did you know that the Fairlight window is incredibly powerful and easy to use? This is where you will create your sound effects with Krotos Studio. You can find the Fairlight tab along the bottom of your DaVinci Resolve window:
Step 2. Add New Track
Now we are in the Fairlight view, we need to add a new track for Krotos Studio to record to. The most ideal workflow is to have a dedicated track for Krotos Studio to record to. This way, you can place your recordings onto new tracks, staying organised, and only needing one instance of Krotos Studio open.
Tip: Krotos Studio is a stereo instrument, so select a 'Stereo' track:
Step 3. Click the Effects '+' Button
Find the number of the track you just added, then click on the small '+' icon next to the 'Effects' label in the mixer on the right-hand side of your screen.
Tip: If you can't see your track here, drag the edge of the mixer window outwards to reveal it.
Step 4. Record Enable the Track
Krotos Studio has now been added as an instrument. Now, we need to tell Resolve to record what comes out of it by clicking the 'record arm' button on the channel. Once you have done this, DaVinci Resolve is now ready to record!
Step 5. Press Record
Showtime!
Just below the video window are the transport controls. To start recording, click the red circle 'record' button. DaVinci will start recording immediately!
Step 6. Perform your Sound Effects
Now that DaVinci is recording the sound effects out of Krotos Studio, it's time to perform your sound effects! Perform your sounds in time with your picture. This method is much more accurate for synchronisation, as you don't need to drag and drop files like you would with other workflows, which can be a painful trial-and-error process.
Conclusion
Recording directly onto the timeline is fast, easy and efficient. Once you have finished recording, simply create a new track, name it appropriately, and then place the recordings onto it. Now, you can switch presets and start the next stage of your sound effects design!
Tip: Be sure to label your tracks as you go; the more sound effects you add, the more complicated your project will become, so it's best to stay organised!
Have fun, and enjoy a much more efficient sound effect workflow with Krotos Studio and DaVinci Resolve.
