Creating your first Ambience Preset
Building Your First Ambience Preset with Krotos Studio Pro
Crafting authentic, evolving soundscapes is a hallmark of effective sound design. Krotos Studio Pro provides a powerful, intuitive platform to build ambience presets tailored to your projects. This guide walks you through creating your first ambience preset, unlocking the flexibility and efficiency Krotos Studio Pro offers.
Getting Started: Exploring Krotos Studio Pro's Features
If you’re already familiar with Krotos Studio, you’ll know it comes packed with an extensive range of ambient presets for various scenarios. Additionally, the AI Ambience Generator allows you to describe an ambience in a text prompt and automatically generate a preset. However, if you need something specific for your project, creating a custom ambience preset using your own library of sounds is a rewarding approach.
To start, we’ll work in Edit Mode, which enables full customization. Using the pre-configured Ambient Template streamlines the setup process, keeping parameter assignments ready for quick drag-and-drop functionality. This template saves time and ensures your custom assets integrate seamlessly.
Step 1: Setting Up Your First Layer
Begin by selecting an ambient sound from your library. For this example, a recording of cicadas from a Los Angeles motel serves as the foundation. Drag this file into Core Engine 1 within the Ambient Template. Core Engine 1 uses a granular engine, ideal for creating evolving, natural sounds.
Press "Start" to activate the sound, and use the XY pad to control the volume and intensity. If your recordings are quiet, normalize the audio to ensure consistent levels. Adjust the gain stages as needed to achieve the desired balance.
To maintain organization, rename the first layer within the tab and assign section. This ensures clarity when revisiting or tweaking the preset later. For instance, rename Layer 1 as "Cicadas" in the tab and assign sections. This will help you quickly identify and control its parameters.
Step 2: Adding a Second Layer
The second layer adds depth to your ambience. For this, choose a corridor room tone. Drag it into Layer Two and normalize it if needed. Using the XY pad, isolate this layer for adjustments before blending it with the first layer.
By positioning the XY pad to combine both layers, you create a more dynamic soundscape. Rename the second layer (e.g., "Room Tone") in both the tab and assign section to maintain organization.
Step 3: Building a Third Layer
Next, bring in a long recording of an air conditioner for Layer Three. Normalize the recording for consistency, and isolate it using the XY pad. This layer adds subtle background noise, enhancing the realism of the ambience. As with the previous layers, rename it ("Air Conditioner") for easy reference.
Blend all three layers using the XY pad, balancing their levels to create a cohesive soundscape. This evolving, non-repeating ambience will feel natural and immersive.
Step 4: Finalizing with a Fourth Layer
For the final layer, choose a more complex recording, such as urban traffic with background sounds like barking dogs or distant chatter. Normalize the audio, isolate it, and adjust its levels before blending it with the other layers. Rename this layer (e.g., "Urban Traffic") for clarity.
Krotos Studio Pro's granular engine ensures these recordings don't loop repetitively but instead generate dynamic, evolving soundscapes. This is crucial for maintaining authenticity and immersion.
Refining Your Ambience
Now that all layers are in place, fine-tune the overall mix using the XY pad to balance the elements. The system intelligently selects sections of longer recordings, ensuring the ambience feels organic and ever-changing. Whether it’s the gentle hum of an air conditioner or distant urban sounds, your preset evolves naturally.
Saving, Exporting, and Sharing
Once your ambience preset is complete, you can save it for future use or share it with collaborators. Use the Preset Export feature to bundle your settings into a reusable format. Teams can leverage these resources for consistent soundscapes across projects.
For even greater flexibility, use Krotos Studio Pro’s multi-channel output to create stems. Assign each layer to a separate output channel and record them into your timeline. This setup allows for precise adjustments during post-production, such as increasing traffic sounds or reducing cicadas.
