About this free cinematic drum sound effect preset

From the creator:

Alongside my work at Krotos, I am a composer and sound designer for theatre, dance and film (including a Crystal Pine Award Nomination in 2023). I use Krotos plugins outside of work as much as inside.

"This preset was created with a cinematic entry or hit, which can easily be customised by distance, feel, and layer using the controls in Krotos Studio. Slam it with your favourite compressor for maximum fun!" - Matt Collings

"Dropping the pitch, adjusting the layers and adding reverb with Quick FX are my top tips with this preset, but use and abuse it and make it your own" - Matt Collings

What inspired you to create this particular preset?

I loved the sound of some Taiko drums we had recorded, and the multiple mic positions lent itself to using the distance pad, so I could very easily adjust and perform the position and feel of the drum hit. Once I built this into a preset it became much faster and easier to use than fixed recordings on the timeline.

I also wanted something eerie and dark to complement the drum hits, to have more tools at my disposal. I quickly added some extra assets from a previous project and made something new!

Using preset export, I could easily share this with the team for fast feedback.

How do you typically use this preset in your workflow?

If I need a cinematic hit to punctuate an edit or add additional drama or mystery to a scene I’m working on.

What's your favourite unconventional sound source or technique?

A technique I’ve used for many years is what I call ‘prepared amplifiers’, where you take a cheap practice guitar amp, rip the grill off, lay it flat on a desk and feed various sounds into it. You then press and directly manipulate the speaker cone as it vibrates to create some amazing crushed textures and tones.

These can then be layered with the original source to create a gritty texture that can only be achieved this way. It also works best when you play the amp loud!😉 It connects you to the sound physically as you are manipulating it with your hands.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Steve Reich + Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine). Minimal orchestral guitar whirlwind would be pretty awesome!
